Remote monitoring and control of railway station services, vehicular

monitoring.
Sitewatch
Remote Control and Monitoring Systems (RCMS) are used to monitor
lifts and escalators at major Railway Stations. The serviceability
of lifts is of particular importance, since they are required for
transportation of Mail between platforms, and the financial penalties
are significant. Failures of escalators during rush-hour periods
have their own safety and financial implications.
Faults detected by the RTUs result in a printed report in the Station
Manager's office so that he can arrange immediate corrective action.
Sitewatch host operators at maintenance centres are presented
with updated status on all relevant lifts and escalators, and use
the information to schedule their activities. To assist them in
this, the system offers a number of useful features:
- Graphics containing Dynamic Overview Maps
- Animated Schematics of Lift and Escalator Detail
- History of all Faults and Events
- Dial Site options
- Easy to use Trender
- Export of Fault Data to Maintenance Scheduler Package
With
this system, the number of faults have been reduced because of improved
maintenance, but also, the speed of response to faults has been
increased. The fault diagnosis information supplied by the RCMS
has lead to faster repairs.
The RCMS system employs one RTU for each item of monitored equipment,
and these report fault conditions to the Sitewatch Server, typically
over a Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) connection. Where
several RTUs are gathered in close proximity, they have been connected
together over a Local Area Network (LAN), in order to allow one
RTU to forward alarms on behalf of the others. This arrangement
significantly reduces telephone costs.
